Europe is set to welcome ultra-rare puppies later this summer as a pure bred Phu Quoc Ridgeback gives birth to her first litter. In the lead up to the delivery, their owner Catherine Lane is welcoming expressions of interest from dog lovers in search of unique four legged companions originating from one of Vietnam’s most picturesque islands.
There are only two Phu Quoc Ridgebacks in Europe and across the globe there are just 800 Phu Quoc Ridgebacks recognised by the Vietnam Kennel Association. Moon and Sirius both make the list and are two of the rarest canines in the world. Both boast pedigree lines, glossy black coats, gentle temperaments, muscular builds and exceptional intelligence.
Catherine Lane says, “Whilst holidaying in Vietnam I fell head over heels in love with this beautiful, unusual breed. After many months of searching I finally found two perfect dogs that I imported to the UK. Moon and Sirius are now Europe’s only Phu Quoc Ridgebacks, and receive non stop attention and admiration everywhere they go. For those in search of something more unusual than a labradoodle or golden retriever, one of Moon’s adorable puppies is guaranteed to turn heads.”
Phu Quoc Ridgebacks have long been considered a Vietnamese national treasure. As the name suggests the breed originates from Phu Quoc, a landmass that translates to the Beautiful Island. Sitting just off the coast of Cambodia, the idyllic island is famous for its palm tree fringed beaches, dense jungle, towering mountains and of course, its native Phu Quoc Ridgebacks. For thousands of years the dogs were isolated from the outside world and bred only with each other. This created a flawless gene pool that is now considered one of the rarest breeds on the planet.
The Pharaoh like dogs are distinguished by a unique ridge that runs from the nape of the neck to the start of the tail. The head is angular which gives it a distinctly Egyptian look, the tapered tail curves up and away from the body while the tongues are peppered with black and blue spots. Coats take on several colour variations, including all over jet black, which is the most coveted colour.
As a courageous breed with regal bearings, Phu Quoc Ridgebacks are perfect for those in search of both loyalty and aesthetics. The breed has a reputation for being a faithful ally and reliable guard dog while its adoration for running, hunting, climbing trees, swimming and playing make it well suited to active owners.
“Phu Quocs are fiercely loyal, so much so that they have even been known to save the lives of their owners. I experienced this myself when Moon and Sirius managed to save me from a deadly viper attack at a Vietnamese villa when they were still puppies.”
Catherine Lane is currently welcoming expressions of interest from buyers in search of an exclusive puppy. One puppy is already being exported to a Dallas-based Danish couple, while the others are expected to be snapped up fast.
